This reorganization has enabled both companies to pursue their strategic goals independently, providing an orderly succession to the next generation of the Hammond family and an opportunity to create increased enterprise and shareholder value. Behind the Hammond name is a rich history, spanning more than 80 years. Hammond Manufacturing was started by Oliver Hammond in 1917 to build various tools for the foundry industry. Always experimenting with things, the new technology of radio broadcasting fascinated the Hammonds, and as a result they began to build radios in 1919. Between 1919 and 1927 O.S. Hammond and Son, as the company was called back then, made tube radio sets, battery chargers, and other products related to broadcast radios. Their philosophy for quality and success was simple. Build the product like you were going to use it yourself. Oliver passed away in 1925 and his four eldest sons took over the business. In 1927, the company name was changed to Hammond Manufacturing. At this time, the Hammonds decided to stop making radios and focus instead on one of the components that went into radios - transformers - and they designed and built a line of transformers and filter chokes for broadcast transmitters and AC radio sets. This proved to be an opportune decision because the economic crash of 1929 caused the failure of many companies that were building radios at the time. In spite of the Great Depression, the broadcast industry as a whole continued to grow and the Company added other more specialized magnetic designs for audio, transmitter, and high voltage transformers. With the start of World War II in 1939, Hammond started to build specialized transformers and reactors for military communication and radar equipment. Almost overnight the Company grew from under 50 employees to over 300 to satisfy the critical surge in demand for transformers. The explosive demand for electrical products of all kinds during the 1950s and 1960s created many opportunities for new products and diversification. During this time, the Company also started to build a standard line of electronic and electrical enclosures. Both the transformer and enclosure businesses continued to grow in the decades that followed. Two new transformer plants were built and two transformer companies were acquired in Wisconsin and California. Then in 2000, it was decided to split Hammond Manufacturing into two separate companies - one focused on enclosures and the other on dry transformers - and this is when Hammond Power Solutions Inc. was born, 83 years after the original company was started, to carry on the tradition of quality, service, and innovation in transformers into the New Millennium. We are a growing and profitable supplier of transformers and related magnetic products dedicated to satisfying the collective needs of our shareholders, customers, suppliers, employees and community.
