Charles E Singleton Company in Battery Wholesale Directory
The Charles E. Singleton Company of Florida was founded in 1952 as a sole proprietorship by Charlie Singleton. He was recognized as an expert in motive type batteries and became the first C & D Battery Company representative in Florida. When he entered the business world there were six (6) C & D fork truck batteries in the state. By the end of the 1960s he had become the largest supplier of fork truck batteries in the state. He excelled in the area of after sales service and became the battery and charger man for the industry. He was the most knowledgeable man in the South when it came to practical DC voltage. Because C & D was the co-developer with the Bell Labs of the Lead Calcium battery for the telecommunications industry, He became the leading salesman in the United States for telecommunications batteries. He was the major supplier to all of the independent telephone companies in the state. He maintained this position until his retirement. Charles E. Singleton Company, Inc. was incorporated in 1967 and expanded its operations by establishing offices in Miami and Tampa. The company prospered under Charlie Singletons leadership and in 1976 he handed over the reins to his son Fred Singleton. Over the next several years the Company continued to grow and became more active in the maintenance and installation of all types of battery systems. In 1976 the company was divided up into two separate strategic business units. Motive power was to address the fork truck industry, which covered warehousing distribution and the Company became the leader in the State. Stationary sales became a stand-alone operation and within a couple of years was the dominant force in the communications and the switch gear industries. General Telephone of Florida (now Verizon) and Florida Telephone (now Sprint United) relied upon Charles E. Singleton Company to supply the vast majority of their standby batteries and for more than 40 years the Company has continued to maintain that role. The first batteries were installed in GTE in 1954. In 1982 it was carefully planned to bring Charles E. Singleton Company into the EF&I world of communications. Integrated power systems became the primary focus of the communications industry. The Company enhanced its capability by upgrading personnel and facilities to meet the requirements. In 1986 after the breakup of AT&T it became clear that the development of Southern Bell was to become a necessary strategic goal in order to achieve greater growth. An office was opened up in Pompano Beach, Florida with the express purpose of achieving certification with Bell South. In the mean time all of the cellular business in the state was put into the category of necessary business. Since that year there have been several key events in the history of the Company. Cellular One (now AT&T Wireless) and Bell South Mobility (now Cingular) picked Charles E. Singleton Company as their prime supplier of integrated power systems and entered into agreements for complete EF&I services. These contracts were for cellular telephone sites. More than 1000 cellular power plants have been installed since 1993 and approximately 500 sites have been upgraded In early 1996 Charles E. Singleton Company entered into an agreement with AT&T Wireless - PCS Division for all the southeastern states and the Caribbean. Charles E. Singleton Company was, also, afforded the opportunity to enter the Certification program with Bell South Services in 1994 and in 1996 became only the third Company to be actively certified at that specific time in the field of Unlimited Power. The other companies who were certified are AT&T (now Tyco) and Reltec (formerly Lorain, now Emerson). Over the past 52 years CES has become a leader in the field for engineer, furnish and installation services in the telephone industry. CES is a leading Bell South turf vendor for unlimited COEI power installation. CES provides turf coverage for Atlanta NE and SE along with the central part of North Carolina including Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Greensboro. CES is currently a certified COEI installation provider for Verizon and works primarily in Florida. In order to meet the markets demand CES has established offices in Atlanta, Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale with its home office located in Tampa, Florida. The future of Charles E. Singleton Company could not be any brighter than at the current time. Existing contracts with Cingular, Sprint, Alltel, MCI, Bell South Telephone Company and Verizon are testaments to the professional demeanor of the Company and its record of service to both individual accounts and the industry.
